A short history
The Sarah P. Duke Gardens first opened to the public in 1991, but its history began much earlier. Sarah P. Duke was born on December 18, 1880 and grew up on the family plantation known as Duke Homestead Plantation. The property had many gardens that were tended by slaves who worked for the Dukes, hence where Sarah got her passion for flowers from!

What to see in the property?
The Diorama building houses more than 15 acres of gardens and nature trails that wind throughout downtown Raleigh, North Carolina. The facility also contains the only public botanical dioramas in the world - three large plant habitats recreated in minute detail to the point where you can see the individual insects on the plants!
The amphitheater is a great outdoor destination, with the backdrop of beautiful flowers and nature. The amphitheater has hosted many live bands, plays, musicals, symphonies and operas.
The Duke Gardens site also contains two grilling areas where you can BBQ! With four gas barbecues at each location - one is on concrete, the other on a wooden deck - it's easy to get your grill on!
The nature trails are a great way to enjoy the outdoors and take in all that Sarah P. Duke Gardens has to offer. There are over 20 miles of nature trails throughout Wake County, so be sure to explore as much of the gardens as possible!
