JC Raulston Arboretum

The JC Raulston Arboretum of Greater Raleigh, NC is a beautiful place to study and enjoy nature. The arboretum has over 13 miles of trails with trees from all over the world. There are even sections for wetland plants, aquatic plants, North American natives, roses and azaleas! If you visit in the springtime, make sure to bring your camera because there are many different types of flowers blooming at that time.

History of the arboretum

The arboretum was established in 1976 with a donation of land from North Carolina Governor James Holshouser. In 1982 it became the official state garden of North Carolina and is part of the NCSU College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. The JC Raulston Arboretum has been dedicated to improving our world's environment through botanical research and education. The arboretum's main goal is to increase awareness of plants and their importance in our lives.

Hiking the trails of the arboretum

There are 13 miles of trails for hiking at the JC Raulston Arboretum. It is a great way to spend an afternoon outdoors and get some exercise! The trails are well-maintained and there are plenty of benches to rest on if you need a break. You can also bring your dog on the trails, but please be sure to clean up after them. Make sure to wear sturdy shoes so you don't slip on any wet or muddy trails. 

Trees and plants to see

There are also over 50 types of trees that you can identify by looking through their leaf or fruit identification guides which you can find in "The Learning Center" building on campus. These trees are from all over the world, so it's a great opportunity to learn about different types of plants. Some of the plants you might see while hiking include:








There are many different types of plants to see throughout the JC Raulston Arboretum, so make sure you wear sunscreen and bug spray! Bring some water with you too because it can get hot outside. It is best to go on a weekday if possible since more people frequent the area over the weekends.

What to bring when visiting the arboretum?

When visiting the arboretum, there are a few things you should bring with you. It can get quite hot outside so sunscreen and bug spray is recommended. Wear sturdy shoes too because the trails might be wet or muddy from recent rainfalls.
